Summer’s End

Interview von: arne mit John, am: 12.04.2005 ]

Das Debüt-Album von Summer’s End aus New Jersey bzw. Maryland liefert fetten, arg schleppenden Metal-Hardcore. Stampfender Mosh, fiese Breakdowns und Unmengen an melodischem Schweden-Riffung formen eine überaus explosive und abwechslungsreiche Platte.

Musicscan: Give us a quick introduction, please. Who does what in the band? And a brief history…

Summer’s End: I’m John(lead Guitar), Then There is, Josh(vocals),Alexei(drums),Paul(Guitar), and Dave(bass)... We have Been Togather Since 2002, Josh, paul and myself are origonal Members, Alexei, and Dave are New Guys....

Musicscan: What was the original goal (or reason) for the formation of Summer s End?

Summer’s End: The origonal Goal was To mix swedish metal, and hardcore together, With a horror Punk vibe To it, hence the name "summers end" which actually Means "samhain"....

Musicscan: What is the driving force making you create aggressive hardcore music? What is your attitude concerning Summer s End in general? Do you work on the band full-time?

Summer’s End: I do Work On the Band full Time, My attitude Twards it is PRetty positive, If you would have asked me 6 months ago i would have Said i hated it, but old bandmembers had alot to do with that... Id have To say my driving force To keep This going is, I Just wanna Have fun, Tour and Play music with My friends..

Musicscan: How did you come up with the band name? Is it a metaphor or a representation for something specific? How does “Summer s End” correspondate with this horror-styled artwork of your new record?

Summer’s End: Great Question.... When Josh and I started this band We wanted To mix in all of the horror elements Of bands Such as the Misfits, and white zombie( 2 of our biggest influences) and We Wanted a Name that didnt Scream out HORROR, And i was like ITs too bad Samhain Is used, thats a great name, and the meaning of samhain is simply " summers end" and we thought It was perfect...

Musicscan: Do you feel that Summer s End has found its "own" sound, or is it still evolving? How did your sound develop since you founded the group?

Summer’s End: Well actually i think We are Still evolving, When I wrote The 9 songs on The CD it was in 2002 and There wasnt a billion metalcore bands, I was really influenced by in flames, darkest hour, At the gates and Dying Fetus.. So our Music is pretty outdated.. We have Some new Stuff that Definatlly Kicks ass and is Alot different...

Musicscan: How would you respond to the charge that throwing in breakdowns or any other ‘heavy' qualities to a more hardcore sound is an attempt to blend two unmixable sounds?

Summer’s End: I think Thats Bull shit, Alot of people dont like Breakdowns Because they are "simple" But it doesnt have To be..and Even Still, Breakdowns are about Feeling, and having Fun... Not being technical, Youll find with alot Of strait up metal bands that they arent Into having fun, They play music To impress each other, And thats cool If thats your Thing, But we are all about having Fun, So hte Punk/hardcore scene Is where We feel most comfortable....

Musicscan: Your Hand Of Hope- record covers a lot of bases musically - there's something for everyone of metal or hardcore. Were you going for a more inclusive approach?

Summer’s End: As i said before i wrote those songs between october 2002-febuary 2003 and i was just Writting Stuff that i liked, Alot of the Songs were really influenced By Punk, Im a big fan of punk progressions and just making it metal and throwing in a Breakdown....

Musicscan: What bands do you consider to be truly inspiring to you? Do you think that your songwriting is affected by music your hear, or do you try not to be influenced by that?

Summer’s End: My Influences Are totally Wild, The only 3 bands that influence me That sounds remotly like what we play is Slayer, darkest hour, and in flames, I take alot of influence From Punk, Bands like Strung out, Alkaline trio, Misfits, Pennywise is what motavates me To play....

Musicscan: I hear some strong European edge in your songs, is there any truth to this? Are you listening to those famous Swedish melodic death heroes?

Summer’s End: I do like alot of swedish metal, That is one thing i have been into since i was like 15, and i never EVER imagined it would catch on like this, In fact alot of the Kids that used To make fun of me For it in high school are all in Metalcore bands that Have Strong Swedish influence.... Some of the Swedish bands i really dig are, At the gates,Inflames, dimension zero, Dissection, Carnal forge(even though they arnt Swedish)....

Musicscan: Was it different writing this album for Summer s End, now that you are more skilled with your instruments and well experienced with your past in different bands?

Summer’s End: No, I was very inexpeirenced when i wrote these songs, I have learned So much from playing these 9 songs over the past 2 years... The new Stuff im writting is Really Awesome, And the new guys in the band Have alot of great ideas, So i really think our next album is Going to be a huge change.....

Musicscan: What does it take to write a particular Summer s End song and how do you go about writing your songs in general?

Summer’s End: I take a Totally different approach these days then i used too, But back then, i kept to 1 scale, and Made everything as melodic and catchy as possible, Which actually was a mistake, i think our cd Should Be more varied, but we were young.. So Whatever ya know?

Musicscan: There are tons of bands out there these days, that are mixing different aggressive metal styles with technical riffs and off time beats. What makes your band stand out?

Summer’s End: Probally our Lyrics, Image, And the fact that We Do guitar Solos, Some bands Do them, but Not alot.. Alot of the bands that do solos dont sound like us....

Musicscan: Is there something you miss within todays heavy music scene? I often miss passion and originality…

Summer’s End: I really like the heavy music scene these days Because The bands Mix up alot of different Stuff, i think music is more interesting these days then say 15 years ago...

Musicscan: Your biggest wish to happen for the band?

Summer’s End: To be able To make a Living Off Playing music and touring...
